65. Contemplate on the letter without a script

Verse 65

கழுத்தையும் நிமிர்த்திநல்ல கண்ணையும் விழித்துநீர்

பழுத்தவாய் விழுந்துபோன பாவம் என்ன பாவமே

அழுத்தமான வித்திலே அனாதியாய் இருப்பதோர்

எழுத்திலா எழுத்திலே இருக்கலாம் இருத்துமே

Translation:

With neck held erect and with eyes opened wide

The way in which you fell into the mouth, what a sad state!

That which remains eternal in the firm seed-

In the letter without a script, you can remain, so hold it.

Commentary: 

Civavākkiyar says that people fall into the mouth of death with their eyes wide open and their neck erect, looking into what they are falling into.  The letters Ci and aum are called the unsounded letters.  They represent universal consciousness.  By contemplating upon this letter the aspirant can win death and become eternal like the letter itself. 

உலகில் மக்கள் கண்ணைத் திறந்துகொண்டே கூற்றின் வாய் விழுகின்றனர். அதை விடுத்து அவர்கள் எழுத்திலா எழுத்தான சி அல்லது ஓம் என்னும் இறைஎழுத்தைத் தியானம் செய்தால் அவ்வெழுத்தைப்போல இறப்பின்றி வாழலாம் என்று சிவவாக்கியர் கூறுகிறார். எழுத்திலா எழுத்து என்பது நாத நிலையைக் குறிக்கும்.

64. What is theertha, is it only sacred waters?-Sivavakkiyam

Verse 64

தீர்த்தம் ஆடவேண்டுமென்று தேடுகின்ற தீனர்காள்

தீர்த்தம் ஆடல் எவ்விடம் தெளிந்துநீர் இயம்பிலீர்

தீர்த்தமாக உம்முளே தெளிந்துநீர் இருந்தபின்

தீர்த்தமாக உள்ளதும் சிவாயஅஞ் செழுத்துமே

Translation:

Ye meek who are searching to bathe in sacred waters

You have not told with clarity where the place for sacred bath is,

After remaining within you with the clarity as the sacred water

What remains as the sacred water is also the five letters Civāyam.

Commentary:

The word tīrtha generally means ‘sacred water’.  A group of seven holy rivers called sapta tīrtha, include Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Narmada, Kaveri, Gadavari and Sindhu.  Tīrtha yātra in Hindu traditions means journey to a holy place.  A visit to sacred places such as Badrinath, Dvaraka, Rameśwaram, Kedarnath, Yamunotri is also called tīrtha yātra.

Tīrtha symbolises the intersection of the mundane and spiritual worlds.  In this respect tīrtha yātra means moving from the profane to the sacred. 

Many great Hindu saints adorn the name tirtha to indicate that their presence purifies everything in their vicinity like sacred water.  This title is not limited only to the Hindu saints.  Jaina teachers were called Tīrthankaras or ‘makers of a ford’.  He is the one who helps people cross the ocean of worldly sorrows and sufferings. 

Civavākkiyar‘s usage of the term ‘tīrtha’ can be taken to mean a sacred water body, as well as a guru. He says that instead of seeking a tīrtha outside, one should realize tīrtha within.  Saraha in his Dohākośa has said: You are seeking your husband within, yet are asking the neighbor as to his whereabouts.  “Scanning the cosmos you waste your hours.  He is present in this little vessel” is a song of the Bauls of Bengal. 

Here tīrtha also refers to the five-letter word na-ma-ci-va-ya. This is the supreme consciousness, the divinity that remains inside.  Once this is realized, the person becomes a tīrtha himself.  Civavākkiyar uses the term ‘teḷintu’, which means becoming clear.  If the water is turbid, anything within it or under it cannot be seen.  Things appear clearly only when the water is clear.   Similarly, the truth is not visible in a turbulent mind.  Only when the mind becomes clear truth is revealed.  That truth is the five-letter word na-ma-ci-va-ya.

பொதுவாக தீர்த்தம் என்பது புனித ஆறுகளை நீர்நிலைகளைக் குறிக்கும்.  ஆனால் சித்தர்களும் யோகிகளும் பொருள் சார்ந்த இவ்வுலகுக்கும் எல்லையற்ற பரந்த நிலைக்கும் இடைப்பட்டதை தீர்த்தம் என்பர்.  அதனால்தான் பல குருக்கள் தீர்த்தர் என்ற பட்டப்பெயரை ஏற்றுகொள்கின்றனர்.  இப்பட்டம் இந்துகளிடம் மட்டுமல்லாமல் ஜைனர்களிடமும் பழக்கத்தில் உள்ளது.  தீர்த்தங்கரர் என்று ஜைன குருக்கள் அழைக்கப்படுகின்றனர்.

சிவவாக்கியர் தீர்த்தம் என்ற சொல்லை புனித நீர் மற்றும் குரு என்ற பொருளில் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.  அதனால்தான் தீர்த்தத்தை வெளியில் தேடாமல் உள்ளே தேடவேண்டும் என்கிறார்.

இப்பாடலில் தீர்த்தம் என்பது நமசிவாய என்ற மந்திரத்தையும் குறிக்கும்.  அந்த மந்திரத்தை உணர்ந்த ஞானி தானே தீர்த்தமாகிறார்.  சிவவாக்கியர் இப்பாடலில் தெளிந்து என்ற சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளார்.  நீர் தெளிந்தால்தான் அதனுள் இருப்பன தெரியும். அதேபோல் மனம் நமசிவாய என்ற மந்திரத்தால் தெளிந்தால் உண்மை, பரம்பொருள் வெளிப்படும்.

63. Attaining the body of light

Verse 63

கரு இருந்த வாசலால் கலங்குகின்ற ஊமைகாள்

குரு இருந்து சொன்ன வார்த்தை குறித்துநோக்க வல்லிரேல்

உரு இலங்கு மேனியாகி உம்பராகி நின்றநீர்

திரு இலங்கு மேனியாகச் சென்றுகூடல் ஆகுமே

Translation:

Ye dumb people who are troubled by the gateway to the womb!

If you are capable of looking carefully the words of the preceptor,

You who remain as a particular form, as a human/celestial,

Will merge becoming a sacred body.

Commentary: 

The gateway to and from the womb is the entrance of the soul into this world, the place of countless misery.  The only way to escape from this misery is to listen to the words of a guru carefully.  If one does so, then his body with a particular form, the form which is subject to destruction will become the sacred body or tiru elangu meni.  The Siddha opine that one goes through the yoga deha (yogic body), siddha deha (body of special powers), mantra deha (the embodiment of the mantra namacivaya) and then attain the divya deha (supreme form, the body of light).  Sivavakkiyar refers to this ultimate form in this verse.

கருவறையின் வாசலே துன்பமான இவ்வுலகில் அடியெடுத்து வைப்பதற்கு முதல் படி.  அத்தகைய பிறவி வேண்டாம் என்று ஒருவர் விரும்பினால் அவர் குருவின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டு அவற்றைக் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டும்.  ஒருவர் சாதாரணமாகப் பெற்றிருப்பது உரு இலங்கு மேனி- ஒரு’ உருவத்தையுடைய உடல்.  குருவின் வார்த்தைகளைக் கடைப்பிடிக்கும்போது பெறுவது திரு இலங்கு மேனி. சித்தர்கள் யோக தேகம். சித்த தேகம், மந்திர தேகம், திவ்ய தேகம் என்று ஒரு சாதகர் பல தேகங்களைப் பெறுவதாகக் கூறுகின்றனர்.  யோக தேகம் ஹடயோகத்தினால் பெறுவது. சித்ததேகம் குண்டலினி யோகத்தால் பெறுவது. மந்திர தேகம் என்பது பிரணவத்தை சுழுமுனையில் செலுத்தி நமச்சிவாய என்ற மந்திர சரீரத்தைப் பெறுவது.  முடிவில் கிட்டும் திவ்ய தேகம் என்பது ஒளியுடல்.  இதுவே திரு இலங்கு மேனி.

When someone hankers after the beautiful girl of one’s desire

Will one spare him? No. One will say, “He should be axed first”

However, when the God of Death comes calling, the same beautiful body will stink,

The lover will gladly take her to the funeral pyre and hand her over to the cremator.

When sweating and wheezing occurs (at the time of death) will the scriptures help?

If you are capable of realizing and contemplating the Lord inside, even for a moment,

Where are the diseases of scriptural baggage? Only power, liberation, attainment!

By reciting scriptures and gaining textual knowledge

You do not know the Supreme consciousness,

After shunning the disease of desire, if you realize It within,

The Lord will remain as the speechless body.

Only when there is the boat (the body) one can roam about,

Only when there is the boat (the body) it can be ensured,

When the boat broke in the incomparable space (the body merged with the supreme space)

No goat (the directed), No stick (the director), there is none at all.

Lord!  The eternal one, the eternal before the eternal,

Woman and man, were they not the same before birth?

At the time when the blind semen of the man increases willingly,

How did the earthlings (those with earth) and celestials (those with space), come about?

Earthlings- those with earth, where the seed grows- women. Celeastials- those with space, those who sow the seed- men.

Is anyone capable of knowing the method of cognition,

Of the wise who realized the locus of the Divine?

Cannot say as any other method but through the object of cognition itself,

Hence, the hands are not raised towards any Deity or a place of worship.

Cleaning the bell, taking the oral secretion from bees                                                  

Ye stupid people who pour it over broken stone!

The Lord is different, see it with knowledge. Did he place me also

At the feet of the Guru to examine and realize (Him)?

Temples-what are they? tanks- what are they?

Ye fools who worship temples and tanks!

Temple and tanks are within the heart

Creation and destruction, never, never, never at all.

You, the ignorant Ones who perform rituals saying worship, worship!

That which is worship itself- where did it accept the worship?

Did the Origin accept the worship? did the Eternal accept the worship?

What is it that accepted worship, please tell!

Who is a low class woman, who is a rich woman?

Is it marked on the flesh, skin or bones?

Enjoying a low class woman, is it different from enjoying a rich woman?

Low class woman and rich woman, look at them critically within you.

You call the water drank as tainted water,

Is it then fair to call that which is chewed in the mouth as sacred Veda?

Those who drink water for removal of spittle!

Come and explain this with drool flowing in your mouth.
