72. The letter that calls the soul when it reaches the sahasrara

Verse 72

சிவாயம் என்ற அக்ஷரம் சிவன் இருக்கும் அக்ஷரம்

உபாயம் என்று நம்புதற்கு உண்மையான அக்ஷரம்

கபாடம் உற்ற வாசலைக் கடந்துபோன வாயுவை

உபாயம் இட்டு அழைக்குமே சிவாய அஞ் செழுத்துமே.

Translation:  

The word civāyam is the word where Śiva resides,

It is the true word that can be believed as means,

The prana that had gone past the entrance in the skull,

The five lettered civāyam will call it employing a means.

Commentary:

Greatness of civayam is described in this verse.  Civavākkiyar says that Śiva, the supreme consciousness resides in this word.  It is the true means for liberation. It is the supreme and goal that welcomes the prana that has left a body through the sahasrara into itself, the state of supreme consciousness. 

In civāyanama, civa stands for tat, nama for tvam and aya stands for asi.  Thus, civaya nama means “that art thou”, one of the maha vakkya or great sayings in Hindu philosophy         The mantra civaya nama means “My belongings and I are not mine, only for Śiva”.  In other words I am not the limited consciousness but the state of supreme consciousness.  

சிவாயம் என்னும் மந்திரத்தின் பெருமையை விளக்கும் மற்றொரு பாடல் இது. இம்மந்திரத்தில் சிவன் குடிகொண்டுள்ளான். இம்மந்திரமே மோட்ச வழியாகும்.  குண்டலினி யோகத்தின் மூலம் பிராணன் சஹஸ்ராரத்தை அடையும்போது இம்மந்திரம் அப்பிராணனை வரவேற்று உயர்நிலைக்கு அழைத்துச்செல்கிறது. 

நமசிவாயம் என்னும் மந்திரத்தில் முறையே சிவா என்பது தத் என்பதையும் நம என்பது த்வம் என்பதையும் ஆய என்பது அசி என்பதையும் குறிக்கின்றன.  இவ்வாறு நமசிவாயம் என்பது “நீயே அது” அல்லது “தத் த்வம் அசி” என்னும் மகாவாக்கியத்தைக் குறிக்கின்றது. சிவாய நம என்பது “நானும் எனது உடைமைகளும் என்னைச் சேர்ந்தவையல்லசிவனை அல்லது உயர்உணர்வுநிலையைச் சேர்ந்தவை” என்பதைக் குறிக்கின்றது.
