114. Worshiping him by his grace

Translation:
Carrying a mud vessel you tire out climbing the mountain,
For all the countless jobs, you say, “I can do it”,
How to live with people who do not worship the Lord
With their heads touching the floor.

Commentary:
This body is the maṇkiḍāram- the mud pot, easily destructible.  People try all kinds of austerities with this mud pot.  It is as if they are climbing a huge mountain carrying a big mud vessel.  In the end, they have nothing but fatigue. Without realizing their stupidity, they say that they are capable of doing anything, any job, any action, any number of them. They are not aware of their limited capacity.

All these efforts will not grant them liberation; they will never get true knowledge.  All they have to do is to worship the Lord with humility.  They should realize their limited capacity, the Lord’s unlimited power, acknowledge it by bowing in front of it and surrender to it.  This action, this alone will grant them liberation.  Manicavasakar mentions this as “worshipping his sacred feet by his grace” (avan arulaal avan adi vanangi).   Civavākkiyar exclaims in frustration that people do not do this simple act and try all kinds of tricks.  He wonders how one could manage to live with such people, to be associated with them.

113. Jyothi darisanam

Verse 113

Translation:
That contains the world within, that which remains in the expansive sky,
That effulgence which, without being in a specific place pervades everything,
That which is present inside and outside without a specific locus,
The one who knows all these exalted places is the wise who knows Śiva.

Commentary:
The Absolute is all-pervasive, all inclusive and everlasting effulgence.  The one who realizes this is truly wise.  He is the one who knows Śiva.

112. Civavakkiyar wonders, "What maya is this?"

Verse 112

Translation:
The world blooming with the fully blossomed pollen/seed as the origin,
The bloomed world, getting delusional going to the next state, and leaving it,
Senses and sense organs losing their form and falling on the earth,
The magic of everything losing its identity, Oh Lord! What sort of a magic is this!

Commentary:
This verse can be interpreted in two ways- the Vedantic way and the yogic way.  If we consider the ideas of Vedanta, the Absolute is the root cause of the universe, the dhātu or the seed.  The manifested universe emerges from that origin.  The world is clouded by maya and other forms of ignorance.  Hence, it gets delusional about the truth.  It goes through the four yugas and finally dissolves into the Absolute (laya). The senses are said to have independent existence within this material world.  When a person leaves his material body and assumes the divya śarira, the senses remain in this world, waiting to be assigned to another Jiva.  During laya, as the senses are also of material origin they collapse into the world and dissolve along with it.

This verse can be interpreted in the yogic parlance as follows: For a yogin during the initial stages of his sādhana, the world remains as it is.  Upon ascending to other levels of consciousness, the world collapses and the yogin experiences the ‘beyond the beyond’.  Now, he does not need the material senses as he has divya cakshu or the divine senses.  The senses of material origin also collapse with the material world and lose their role, function as they are not needed anymore. This is the great magic that the Absolute enacts for a yogin who ascends to higher levels of consciousness.

The term dhatu means the seed as well as ‘that which enters into the formation of the body’.  Thus, the dhatu in the first line may mean the seven components plasma (rasa- tissue fluid consisting of lymph, blood plasma, breast milk and the menstrual fluid), blood (raktha), muscles (mamsa), fat (meda), bone (asthi), bone marrow (majja) and reproductive fluid (shukra).  All these together constitute a human body the microcosm.  The microcosm reflects the macrocosm or the universe.  The human form that came about so gets delusional due to maya.  Leaving the knowledge about its true nature it thinks it is perishable.  The five senses lose their function, become one with the world, with their organs losing their identity.  Civavakkiyar asks the Divine what sort of a maya is this which happens so.

111. Sivavakkiyar explains Siddha advaita, pantheism, evolution and the nature of a liberated soul

Verse 111

Translation:
It is the primordial one that appears as many forms.
After becoming all the life-forms belonging to different categories
After returning from being with the primordial one and taking a birth
Will remain as pure, effulgent and wise.

Commentary:
This very interesting verse encapsulates several important philosophical concepts within it.  The primordial Absolute becomes different life-forms and remains as them in this world.  Through this statement, Civavākkiyar explains the concept of advaita and pantheism where everything is none other than the divine.  However, he does not subscribe to the maya vada, which says that this world is mitya or fallacy while only the Divine is true.  He says that the primordial exists as this world and hence, this world, which emerged from the ultimate truth, the Absolute, is as real as the Absolute.  This doctrine may be termed as Siddha-advaita, the advaita philosophy of the Siddhas as distinct from Śankaras advaita.  This is similar to the tenets of Kashmir Śaivism, which states that this world is as real as the Absolute.

In the second line, Civavakkiyar states that he evolved through various life forms.  This supports the modern theory of evolution where lives go from lower forms to higher during their evolution. The soul gains wisdom during this process that propels it towards higher births.

In the third line, Civavākkiyar seems to be putting out another interesting concept.  Here he says that he remaining with the Absolute, came out of such an association and took up a birth.  He does not say that he was the Divine who was born as various life-forms.  He does not say that he remained the ādi. This line leads to the conclusion that the limited soul is subtly different from the Universal soul.  It remains with the universal soul during the time intermediate between births and returns to the world as and when its karma directs it so.  Saints describe this intermediate gap as the resting time that the Lord, out of his mercy, is granting to the Jiva that has suffered immensely due to the birth it just completed.

The last line describes a realized soul.  Such a soul gets the divya deha or the body of light.  Here Civavākkiyar says that he will become the effulgent wise.  He also says that he will be purity.  He becomes so as he is free from any association with karma. It is karma that makes a soul have blemishes such as false knowledge, wrong attitude etc.

110. Namacivaya is the threshold between birth and death

Verse 110

Translation:
Blocking the nine gates of trouble the entrance that was reached
It is here that the five letters remained effulgent
Opening the good gate and going through the gate of wisdom
Those who had seen the gate of the frontier are never born again.

Commentary:
The nine gates of trouble are the nine apertures of eyes, ears, nose, mouth, organ of procreation and that of waste management.  Closing these entrances through yoga, the gate on top of the head, sahasrara is opened.  It is at this gate that the five letters of namacivaya stand shinning.  Those who have opened this good gate and gone through the gate of wisdom, the gate at the frontier of limited existence, the one which leads to universal existence, do not have any subsequent births.

109. "Truth" about aum namacivaya!

Verse 108

Translation:
aum na ma ci va yam after realizing it and realizing about the body,
aum na ma ci va yam after realizing it and realizing the truth,
aum na ma ci va yam after realizing it and realizing it within the body,
aum na ma ci va yam will remain merged within.

Commentary:
We have already seen before how the eight lettered mantra aum na ma ci va ya is established in the human body. a u ma na ma ci va ya indicates creation where the primordial sound remains as a- Isvara, u- Isvara's creative power and ma- the Jiva.  a u m are also said to be Pati, Pasu and paasam or attachment.  The mantra and its meaning are the ultimate truth that wise would strive to realize.  We have seen in our other blog, agatthiyarjnanam where the verses are present as a conversation between Agatthiyar and Pulatthiyar.  In the verse 79 Pulatthiyar requests Agatthiyar to explain to him the glory of the five letter mantra.

Civavākkiyar has used the word ‘mei’ in an interesting fashion here.  The mei in the first line means ‘the body’.  In the second line, ‘mei’ means understanding the truth.  In the third line, it means ‘realizing it within the body’. When the truth about this mantra and its location within the body are known the mantra remains within the body.  One attains the ‘mantra meni’ or the body of mantra.

108. The truth about linga and yoni according to Sivavakkiyar

Verse 108

Translation:
Along with eyes and the moist place of birth of a pleasure giving young women,
One can blabber outside but the effect has never stopped,
The place where the space spread, the primal seed within that space,
It is essential for the wise to know about this clearly.

Commentary:
People put forth all sorts of theories regarding the liṅga and the yoni. They denigrade the Śaivites as worshipers of sexual symbols.  Civavākkiyar says that it really does not matter what they blabber. The effect has not stopped.  The primal seed, Śiva comes together with the supreme space Śakti and the manifested universe emerges.

Agatthiyar in his work Agatthiyar meijnana kaviyam says clearly that the yoni are the cakra and the kundalini energy that bursts forth through them is the lingam.  Civavakkiyar is saying the same here.  The place where the ‘veli’ is spread are the six cakras. The primal seed is the power of kundalini the creative force.  This is the linga.  Only the wise know this truth.

107. Lord Visvanatha, Kasi, Taraka mantra, what are they in kundalini yoga?

Verse 107

Translation:
In the brilliant Kāśi, for all those who come and stay there,
Viśvanatha who has space and effulgence as His body,
Along with the lady of clarity, His consort, the protective mantra that he utters,
The simple ambrosial name, Rama.

Commentary:
Among the several mantras in our scriptures, Rama nama is called the tāraka mantraTāraka means ‘one that helps to cross’ and also ‘one that protects’. Rama nama helps one to cross the ocean of samsara.  Chanting Rama nama is worshipping the divine in a specific form. It is similar to chanting the pranava, aum, in worship of the divine in the formless form.  In yoga, rum is the seed mantra of the manipuraka cakra.  This cakra is responsible for radiating prana through the body.  By reciting the mantra rum, the manipuraka cakra is activated and is able to handle the flow of kundalini śakti.  Also, Ra is associated with the solar energy that flows through the right side of the human body; ma is associated with the lunar energy that flows through the left side of the body.  By chanting rama, these two energies are brought in balance thus conferring sound physical and mental health.

The word tāraka also means ‘star’.  Rama nama is the star that guides us through the worldly life.  The story of the sacred place Kāśi mentions that for those who are living in Kāśi, at the time of their death, Lord Vishvanatha utters the Rama nama in their ears so that their souls will cross the ocean of samsara.

The city of  Kāśi, is the most sacred place for Hindus.  It is considered as the sacred image of the cosmos and the permanent earthly home of Lord Śiva. According to the legends, it is here that Siva’s fiery liṅga of light burst forth from the netherworlds, splitting open the earth and stood piercing the highest of heavens.  The city of Kāśi of a radius of ten miles is itself considered as the liṅga with the sacred circles or maṇḍala, the very embodiment of Lord Śiva himself.

This line can be interpretted in another way also.  The city of Kāśi represents the ajña cakra, the spot between our eyebrows.  Saint Vallalar says that a jyoti or effulgence is present here.  The ajña cakra is the brilliant city of Kāśi.  The ajña cakra is the locus of the guru.

Viśvanāthan means Lord of the Universe, the Absolute.  The Absolute, the ultimate guru, teaches the tāraka mantra, to those who are capable of raising their kundalini śakti to this spot.  The Absolute’s consort mentioned here is the Kundalini śakti herself.  She is the Manonmani who provides mental clarity.
