74. Yogis please explain....

Verse 74

Translation:
Is the soul eternal, is the soul eternal,
Are the five sense organs and senses eternal?
Are the debating books and Śadāśivam eternal?
The Great Yogins!  You should tell quickly.

Commentary:
The nature of the limited soul, senses, sense organs, pramāṇa and the state of Śadāśiva are all explored here.  Pati, pasu and pāsam are the three concepts central to Śaiva philosophy.  Pati is the Lord, pasu is the limited soul and pasam is the bondage.  In this verse, Pati is referred to as Śadāśiva, pasu the atma and pāsam as the senses and sense organs.  The information collected through the sense organs and senses give the atma or pasu, a sense of limitation thus clouding its true nature as the universal consciousness/eternal bliss or Śadāśiva.  The pramana or the Vedas and Agamas that describe these three concepts are said to be divine utterances and hence eternal in nature.

Pluralistic view claims that all the three entities pati, pasu and pāsam are always distinct and eternal.  Monistic view to which Tirumular and his follower, Civavākkiyar subscribe to, claims that all the three stop existing once their true nature is realized.  Civavākkiyar is beseeching the truly accomplished souls, the yogins, to tell him whether they are truly three or one and whether they are eternal. The term vīkka vanda yogikāḷ may also be translated as the yogins who have control or sublimation of the senses.

73. Nature of the Ultimate Reality

Verse 73

Translation:
Not form, not space, not supported by anything,
Not transformation, not measurable, not the other, not the one without,
Not big, not small, not the speaking soul/ghost,
The honesty of remaining rare. Who is capable of seeing it?

Commentary:
This verse defines the Ultimate Reality.  It is not limited to a specific form.  It is both with form and formless.  Nammazhwar says  uḷan enil uḷan avan uruvam ivvuruvugaḷ, uḷan alan enil avan aruvam ivvuruvugaḷ, uḷan ena ilanena ivai guṇamuḍaimaiyil
uḷan iru tagaiyoḍo ozhivilan parandhē (Thiruvaimozhi 1.1.9).  “If you say He is (with form) then all these are His forms, if you say He is not (with form) then all these are His formless expression.  Verily He remains with both form and formless.  He remains in both states without fail, pervading everything.”  The Ultimate Reality is present with both form and formlessness.  Hence, it cannot be defined as either one or the other.

The Ultimate Reality supports everything as a substratum but remains itself unsupported.  Tāyumānavar calls it as ‘nirālambam’.  It does not transform into anything, nor is it a product of any transformation.  It is not measurable.  kādam’ means a measure of a mile.  One can never say ‘this is not the Ultimate Reality, it is the other’.  Everything is the Ultimate Reality.  It is the one with all the qualities and not defined by any specific quality (guṇapūrṇa and nirguṇa).  It is both the biggest as well as the smallest (aṇor aṇīyān- smallest of the small, mahato mahīyān- the biggest of the big).  It is not the Jiva but includes it.

Civavākkiyar is amazed by the how everything is the Ultimate Reality and wonders whether anyone is capable of seeing its magnificence.

72. The letter that calls the soul when it reaches the sahasrara

Verse 72

Translation:
The word civāyam is the word where Śiva resides,
It is the true word that can be believed as means,
The prana that had gone past the entrance in the skull,
The five lettered civāyam will call it employing a means.

Commentary:
Greatness of civayam is described in this verse.  Civavākkiyar says that Śiva, the supreme consciousness resides in this word.  It is the true means for liberation. It is the supreme and goal that welcomes the prana that has left a body through the sahasrara into itself, the state of supreme consciousness.

In civāyanama, civa stands for tat, nama for tvam and aya stands for asi.  Thus, civaya nama means “that art thou”, one of the maha vakkya or great sayings in Hindu philosophy         The mantra civaya nama means “My belongings and I are not mine, only for Śiva”.  In other words I am not the limited consciousness but the state of supreme consciousness.

71. Linga in the Body...

Verse 71

Translation:
All the fifty one letters are contained within the one letter
The mantra pervading the sky and the four Vedas aren’t they one?
That which sprouted from the all-pervasive five letters,
It remained as the base of linga in the body. Civāyam.

Commentary:
The letter aum represents the transcendental aspect of the Divine.  It is the inaudible sound or nāda from which the auditory world emerged. It is not the aum that we chant as the letter we chant is physical, subject to our hearing and understanding it.  It is from aum that letters, words and sentences emerged. Civavākkiyar says that the fifty one letters of the Sanskrit alphabet emerged from aum, the four Vedas emerged from aum.  Hence, the four Vedas are explanations of aum , the mantra that represents the Divine.

Tirumular has described extensively about the pancākṣara mantra in his Tirumandiram.  Suffice to describe it here in the context of the body.
According to Thirumular, the five letters na-ma-ci-va-ya and aum are present as follows in the body.  In the muladhara is na, in the svadishtana is ma, manipura is ci, in the anahata center is va, the visshudi is ya and in the ajna is aum.  This is called mantira meni or the body of mantra.  Thus, the namacivaya forms the base of the linga and the eyebrow cakra, the site of God consciousness is where aum is present.

The shape of liṅga is interesting in the context of storage of energy.  In a deep meditative state, the energy of a person takes the shape of a liṅga.  Satguru Jaggi Vasudevan says, “The core of every galaxy is always an ellipsoid.  The shape of ellipsoid (of which the liṅga is the perfect example) is the first form of manifestation and the final form of dissolution.  It is the doorway to the beyond. It is beyond any religion.“
anga liṅga pīdamāi amaindade civāyame . This line may also be interpretted as follows: anga- means soul and liṅga means Śivam, pīdam the base (or equation) ie., for the jiva-siva aikyam or Jiva=Śiva equation, the basis is ci-va-ya-na-ma.
