82. The wealth is for the wife only...

மாடு கன்று செல்வமும் மனைவி மைந்தர் மகிழவே

மாடமாளி கைப்புறத்தில் வாழுகின்ற நாளிலே

ஓடிவந்து காலதூதர் சடுதியாக மோதவே

உடல்கிடந்து உயிர்கழன்ற உண்மைகண்டும் உணர்கிலீர்

Translation:

Cow, calf and riches are for the happiness of wife and offspring,

During the days living in the mansion,

When the messengers of death come and collide with (you) quickly,

Even after seeing the truth of life loosening out while body remains, you do not realize.

Commentary:

One works very hard to accumulate wealth.  He thinks that he is doing it for his own good life.  That is not entirely true.  More than the person who is working hard earning it, it is only the people around him, his family who enjoy the riches.  All these relationships are only through the body.  Once the body falls there are no relationships.  There is no one who is your father, your mother, your wife or your son.  This verse reminds us of the story of Valmiki who was a wayside robber.  Saint Narada asked him the reason for his deplorable life.  Valmiki said that it was for the welfare of his family.  When Narada asked him to check with his family who are enjoying his plunders if they are willing to share the sin that comes along with the riches, Valmiki was shocked to find that none of his family members were willing to share it with him.  This led him to the spiritual path. 

Civavākkiyar conveys the same idea in this verse.  He says that one may work very hard to earn riches for his family but when the guards of Yama come knocking at the door none of these relationships will persist.

ஒருவர் வாழ்க்கையில் மிகக் கடுமையாக உழைத்து பொருளைத் தேடுகிறார்.  அதனால் தான் இன்பவாழ்க்கை வாழப்போவதாக எண்ணுகிறார்.  உண்மையில் அவர் சேர்த்த செல்வத்தை அனுபவிப்பது அவரது மனைவியும் மக்களுமே. வால்மீகியின் வாழ்க்கைக் கதையே இதற்கு உதாரணம்.  வால்மீகி முதலில் ஒரு வழிப்பறிக் கொள்ளையராக இருந்தார்.  தனது மனைவியையும் மக்களையும் காப்பாற்ற அவர் கொலையிலும் கொள்ளையிலும் ஈடுபட்டார். ஒருமுறை அவர் இருந்த காட்டிற்கு வந்த நாரதர் அவரிடம் அவரது செயலுக்கான பாவத்தை அவரது மனைவியும் மக்களும் பகிர்ந்துகொள்வர்களா என்று கேட்டார்.  வால்மீகியும் தனது மனைவியும் மக்களிடம் அக்கேள்வியைக் கேட்டபோது பாவத்தை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள அவர்கள் தயாராக இல்லை என்பதை அறிந்தார். அந்த நொடியே அவர் தனது பழைய வாழ்க்கையை விட்டுவிட்டு ராம நாம ஜபத்தை மேற்கொள்ளலானார். 

இப்பாடலில் சிவவாக்கியர் அந்த கருத்தையே விளக்குகிறார். பாடுபட்டுத் தேடிய பணத்தைஅனுபவிக்கும் மனைவியும் சுற்றத்தாரும் காலதேவன் வந்து கதவைத் தட்டும்போது அந்த இடத்தைவிட்டு ஓடிவிடுவர்.
