75. When there is curd in the pot hook.....

Verse 75

அறிவிலே பிறந்திருந்த ஆகமங்கள் ஓதுறீர்

நெறியிலே மயங்குகின்ற நேர்மை ஒன்று அறிகிலீர்

உறியிலே தயிர் இருக்க ஊர்புகுந்து வெண்ணெய் தேடும்

அறிவிலாத மாந்தரோடு அணுகுமாற தெங்ஙனே.

Translation:

You are reciting the Agamas that emerged from the mind,

You do not know the genuine way of losing yourself in the right path,

While the curd remains in the hoop those who search for butter in the town,

How to associate with such mindless people?

Commentary:

Vedas and Agamas are the two sources of knowledge that are considered as divine utterances.  Vedas are said to be general while the Agamas are specific in nature.  In this verse, Civavākkiyar accuses people that they are mindlessly reciting the Agamas which provide the direct means to realize the Ultimate Reality.  Without realizing that they have the means with them, people are searching hither and thither for the Ultimate Reality.  This is like a foolish person searching for butter while the curd remains in the house.

It is interesting that Civavākkiyar says that the people are looking for butter when there is curd at home.  One has to churn the curd to get the butter.  Similarly, one has to analyze the Agamic statements to find the true way and realize the Ultimate Reality.  It is not available ready-made, like the butter.  In this case, people are either lazy to take the effort to find out the truth, or are very stupid not to realize the presence of the means with them. 

இறைவனின் வார்த்தைகள் என்று கருதப்படும் வேதங்களும் ஆகமங்களும் இறையருளால் மனிதனின் அறிவிலிருந்து தோன்றியவை.  அவற்றை வெறும் வார்த்தைகளாக உச்சரிக்காமல் அவற்றின் உட்பொருளை உணர்ந்து அவற்றின் நெறியில் நிற்பது அவசியம். அவ்வாறு இல்லாத மக்களை சிவவாக்கியர் உரியில் தயிர் இருக்கும்போது ஊரில் வெண்ணைக்கு அலைபவர்கள் என்று குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.

வெண்ணெய் இருக்கும்போது தயிர் தேடுபவர் என்று சிவவாக்கியர் குறிப்பிடுவதில் ஒரு விசேஷம் உள்ளது. தயிரைக் கடைந்தால்தான் வெண்ணெய் வரும். அவ்வாறே ஆகமங்களை ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தால்தான் இறைமை புலப்படும்.  அவ்வாறு செய்யாதவர்கள் ஒன்று முயற்ச்சியற்ற சோம்பேறிகள் அல்லது இறைமையை உணரத் தெரியாத முட்டாள்கள்.
