104. Explain the secret of the five letter mantra

Verse 104

நமசிவாய அஞ்செழுத்தும் நல்குமேல் நிலைகளும்
நமசிவாய அஞ்சில்அஞ்சும் புராணமான மாயையும்
நமசிவாய அஞ்செழுத்து நம்முளே இருக்கவே!
நமசிவாய உண்மையை நன்குஉரைசெய் நாதனே!

Translation:

The five letters of namacivaya will grant superior states

The ancient maya will fear the five of namacivaya

For the five lettered namacivaya to remain within us

Please explain the truth, namacivaya well, Lord!

Commentary:

The sacred mantra na-ma-ci-va-ya is the supreme panacea for everything.  It grants all higher states of existence and the supreme state of liberation.  The maya that is as eternal as the Lord fears this five lettered namacivaya as it has the capacity to destroy the effects of maya.  Hence, Civavākkiyar requests the Lord to explain the truth about namacivaya well so that it remains firmly within him.  The term ‘namacivaya uṇmaiyai’ also means ‘the truth, which is namacivaya’. 

The second line añcum purāṇamāna māyaiyum can also be interpreted in another way as the añcum represents the five state of the Absolute namely Śiva, Śakti, Sadasiva, Iśvara and Sadvidya.  These five are followed by maya which is sixth in line of emanation. Civavākkiyar has explained in verse 96 how namacivaya forms the various body parts. 

நமசிவாய என்னும் ஐந்தெழுத்து உயர் விழிப்புணர்வு நிலைகளையும் எல்லா உயர்ந்த பதவிகளையும் அளிக்கும்.  இந்த ஐந்தெழுத்துகளையும் கண்டு பழமையான மாயை பயப்படுகிறது.  அதனால் சிவவாக்கியர் இறைவனிடம் இந்த ஐந்தெழுத்துக்களின் சூட்சுமத்தை விளக்குமாறு வேண்டுகிறார்.
