Significance of number 18

 18 என்ற எண்ணின் முக்கியத்துவம்

முனைவர் த. என். கணபதி அவர்கள் தமது சித்தர் குறியீட்டு மொழியும் திருமூலரின் சூனிய சம்பாஷணையும் என்ற நூலில் 18 என்ற எண்ணைப் பற்றி விரிவாக எழுதியுள்ளார் (ப. 55-60)

18 என்ற எண் தத்துவ ரீதியில் முக்கியமான ஒன்றாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது. தமிழ் சித்தர்கள் பதினெண் சித்தர்கள் என்று குறிப்பிடப்படுகின்றனர். சங்க காலத்தில் இயற்றப்பட்ட நூல்கள் பதினெண் கீழ்க்கணக்கு எனப்படுகின்றன .  மகாபாரதப் போர் பதினெட்டு நாட்கள் நடைபெற்றது என்றும் ராம ராவண யுத்தம் பதினெட்டு மாதங்கள் நடந்தது என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.  பகவத் கீதை பதினெட்டு அத்தியாயங்களை, யோகங்களைக் கொண்டது.  ரஸேஸ்வர தர்சனம் என்ற நூல் பாதரசம் பதினெட்டு முறைகளில் விரிவு படுத்தப்படுகிறது என்று கூறுகிறது. பதினெட்டு தேவர்கள், பதினெட்டு தர்ம சாத்திரங்கள், பதினெட்டு யுகங்கள் பதினெட்டு குற்றங்கள், பதினெட்டு மொழிகள், பதினெட்டு வகையான இசைக்கருவிகள், என்று பல இடங்களில் பதினெட்டு என்ற எண்ணிக்கை தோன்றுகிறது.  குண்டலினி யோகத்திலும் பதினெட்டு ஒரு முக்கியமான எண் . குண்டலினி சகஸ்ராரத்தை அடைந்த பிறகும் 18 மகாவித்யாக்களைக் கடக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது என்று அஜீத் முகர்ஜி மற்றும் மது கன்னா என்பவர்கள் தமது நூலில் கூறுகின்றனர். (The Tantric way p156). நமது உடலில் 18 இடங்களில் உணர்வுக் கட்டுப்பாட்டு மையங்கள் உள்ளன என்றும் குண்டலினி சக்தியின் மேனி 18 எழுத்துக்களை உறுப்புககளாகக் கொண்டது என்றும் சட்டை முனி கூறுகிறார். (சட்டைமுனி ஞானம் பாடல் 3). மாணிக்க வாசகரும் இறையனுபவமும் அதற்குப் பிற்பட்ட நிலையும் 18 அம்சங்களைக் கொண்டது என்று கூறுகிறார்.  

Significance of number 18

Dr. T.N. Ganapathy in his book ‘sittarkalin kuriyeettu mozhiyum Tirumularin sooniya sambashanaiyum’ elaborates on the significance of number 18 (p 55-60).  According to him the Tamil Siddhas are referred to as 18 Siddhas. The pathinen keezhkkanakku texts were composed during the Sangam period. The Mahabharata war lasted for 18 days. Rama- Ravana was is believed to have spanned 18 months. The Bhagavad Gita comprises 18 chapters or 18 yogas. 18 Puranas, 18 dharma shastras, 18 languages, 18 musical instruments, and 18 major diseases are mentioned in various texts. Raseshvara darsanam mentiones that mercury is processed in 18 ways. In Kundalini yoga it is said that kundalini has to transcend 18 further levels or Mahavidyas, after reaching sahasrara to reach the totally liberated state. The number 18 is also significant in Kundalini yoga.  Sattaimuni jnana verse 3 says that 18 centers of consciousness in our body and that the body of Kundalini comprises of 18 letters as its parts. Manikkavasakar indicates that the Divine experience and the subsequent state of the experiencer comprises of 18 aspects.
